Blackheath Squash Club
Rectory Field, Charlton Road • London • SE3 8SR
Sunday training is on every Sunday in June, except for Sunday 14th. I have cleared the courts for general bookings.
There's the tiniest sliver of an off-chance that I might still be in the British Open Masters competition on finals day this Sunday, but in almost certain probability, we will be training this coming Sunday.
If you're new to the club or you want to try something new with your squash, come take a look. The sessions are based on ball control drills and conditioned games where players are made to repeat specific movements and restricted shot options throughout the rallies.
I attended a coaching seminar organised by the World Squash Federation about neuroscience in squash. They focused on elite athletes, but all of what was discussed pertains to us club hacks, too. Repeated practice produces myelin, a fatty substance that forms an insulating layer around the axons of neurons, which helps increase the speed of electrical impulses along the nerve cells. The more myelin you have, the quicker your body can do what you tell it to do.
Practice makes perfect, but it also makes permanent. Sundays are for making sure your myelin knows what it's doing!
They also spoke about the hormones involved in training, competing and winning/losing. The nicest takeaway for me was to find out that feeling grateful, thankful and happy about being there actually releases hormones that make us perform better.
I shall pack gratitude, thankfulness and sheer elation in my kit bag for the week ahead. On that note, I wish everyone a glorious summer of squash.
Hope to see you on court soon.
Coach Ville
